When the Prime Minister Tuilaepa stepped aside for a certain bronze medal to give the opportunity to a young archer, he gave up his chance of taking a medal home from the XVI Pacific Games.
His unselfish move was intended only to inspire the youth but he was totally unaware that his inspirational influence as a role model, was about to guarantee that he will not return home empty handed.
Samoa’s Archery’s golden girl Jil Crete Walter steeped up and gifted the Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi with her gold medal.
Walter won two, the first was in single competition and the second, which he presented to the PM was from her team win in the recurve mixed team 70 meters with her father Muaausa Joseph Walter.
“ I have been wanting to win a gold medal for a long time so that I can gift it to you for being a role model to us all young people in archery, for promoting archery as a sport and for your support to me and my father,” the young Walter said .
“This is also gifted to you as the chairman and the patron of the Archery Association.”
The gesture by the young athlete was acknowledged by the Prime Minister and thanked her for presenting him with a gold medal.
“ This gold medal is special. It is the first gold medal presented to me. Thank you Jil.”
Tuilaepa was proud of the performance by the archery team especially against the strong teams from New Caledonia and Tahiti, yet it is a new sport in Samoa.
He was also proud of the contribution of archery to Samoa’s medal count.
