The cruise liner MSC Magnifica will pay another visit to Samoa next year after a highly successful first call into Samoa this week.

The CEO of the Samoa Shipping Services Lautimuia Uelese Vaai said the captain and the crew were impressed with the reception by the government and the people of Samoa.

They also commended the way the cruise liner was handled when it docked at the wharf and also the tours for the passengers.

These have earned Samoa another visit by the cruise ship next year. Lautimuia said this was confirmed by the captain to the government of Samoa.

He added that the government of Samoa is also asking the Company to make Samoa a port of call for their other ships.

If this can be done the Samoan seafarers contracts can be done from this end with the seafarers boarding with the start of their contract and exiting the ships at the end of their contract here in Samoa. This he said will save on travel and immigration process expenses.

“ If the Company knows that this is a cheaper option then there will be more job opportunities for our seafarers. This is the long term goal of the government of Samoa,” Lautimuia explained.

Lautimuia said that local suppliers will also benefit from the cruise ships as seen in the visit of the Magnifica.

Ah Liki Wholesale and Vailima Breweries were two companies which supplied some of the provisions for the cruise ship.Vailima supplied the drinks while Ah Liki Wholesale supplied the foodstuff like chicken and fruits like apples and oranges.

Lautimuia said 6 containers of provisions for the ship were sent to Samoa from Italy and they arrived well ahead before the arrival of the ship. These were put under the care of the Samoa Shipping Services.

The Company he added was requested if local suppliers could be used and it was why Ah-Liki and Vailima Breweries supplied the remaining provisions.

Lautimuia is optimistic that if Samoa can supply all the provisions cheaply this can be all done from this end. This is a challenge for the local suppliers he said.
