Ofakifomiapuli Fakaosi Fetalaiga, is enjoying one of her best Mother’s Day today, after watching her daughter graduate on Friday as a police officer.
Her 21 year old daughter, Salvation Hellen Fetalaiga, made her a very proud mother and not just by graduating after 17 weeks of training, as the youngest in the class of 36.
“This is the perfect mother’s day gift for me and I don’t want anything else as I am very proud of my daughter’s achievement, “Fetalaiga, who is Tongan, said.
The course was not easy but I saw her determination and resolve it really makes me a very happy mother to see her succeed.”
Fetalaiga said her daughter had always wanted to be recruited into the Tongan army and tried to persuade the family to leave Samoa to enroll in basic army recruit training in Tonga.
“I couldn’t bring myself to do it as I have other kids to worry about,” the mother explained.
‘Salvation is the eldest of our 8 kids, I couldn’t just leave the younger children behind in Samoa.
“I wanted our family to be here and I advised her to seek employment with police instead as it is an interesting and rewarding job.
“She applied last year but she did not meet the standard age accepted and she had to wait again for this year to apply and she got in and all the way to graduating this class.
“She has done good and it is the love of God that has made my daughter successful in this first phase of this honorable career here.”
The new family police officer admitted the tough times she went through with studies and other outside influences.
“A lot of temptations during our training like having fun times but we managed to overcome the hurdles and focused on what was really important.”
Salvation credits a lot of her determination to pull through on her parents encouragement, who were there to give the needed push when she needed it the most.
Salvation told Newsline Samoa that she has been inspired to become a police officer by her uncles who all live in Tonga and America.
“They have the most controlled minds and manners ever and it is one thing I always admire in them.
In the hardest situations in life, they are calm and they control the situations very carefully with very positive and soothing words to calm the situations.
It is what I love about these loved ones and I want to become like them the art of patience, love and support.
