The long awaited court hearing started today, Monday 1 October 2019, for Kolani Jr. Lam, who is charged with the murder of his wife, the late Sa’u Justina Sa’u, CEO of the Unit Trust of Samoa UTOS.

The 38-year-old Lam was arrested last November 2018 and charged with the murder of Sa’u who was allegedly strangled.

Justice Mata Tuatagaloa is presiding in the Supreme Court hearing.

Several prosecution witnesses were called in to testify at the start of proceedings including the defendant’s stepdaughter.

The 14 year old told the court that she often saw her mother punched and slapped by Lam.

She recalled one of the incidents when her stepfather threw a kitchen pot at her mother, it hit her on the back of her head.

She ran over and took her mother into her arms, but Lam grabbed hold of her and hurled her into the kitchen.

Her yells for help brought in a cousin of Lam who stopped the violence.

Prosecution has lined up a long list of witnesses over what is expected to be a long court hearing.

Justice Mata delayed court proceedings in the afternoon to allow for the court to take an on site visit of the crime scene.
