China will continue to offer assistance to athletes from Samoa in the future by training them in China.

The arrangement is a continuation of the assistance which was offered to athletes from a number of sports from Samoa to train in China in their preparations for the Pacific Games.

This offer is welcoming news for the Minister of Education Sports and Culture Loau Keneti Sio.

Loau said that they have had meetings with China and it is now confirmed that China will host athletes from Samoa in the second half of the year.

“ As the Minister of Sports this is very exciting news. I’m just thankful to their assistance to us,” Loau told Newsline.

The Minister  welcomes the assistance because of the good performance by the athletes trained in China in the Pacific Games. Many of these athletes who went to China won medals for their sports, and for some of these sports it was their first to win medals in the Pacific Games.

“ We should take advantage of these opportunities to up skill our athletes. The athletes going over to China are from Boxing, Weightlifting , Tennis, Badminton, Table Tennis, Swimming , Athletics , Archery, Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball.

Loau added that most of the athletes who will be selected to go to China are students. It is planned they will go during the holidays.

Loau said that parents consent will be required as done when they went to China this year. “ Parents of students and also working people had the choice of whether to attend the China training exercise or not.”

Loau is praying for a large contingent to go train in China.
